When I enter the space, the young midfielder picks up a soccer ball he clings to until after the conversation. It’s a simple symbol for a ambition he has always held onto. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and raw talent won over teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult person to convince was not a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his career in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

However, the famed academy – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. Following Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “shocked” to discover he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Year and Continental Arrival

This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” starting with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his country to the title and being named best player.

A month later, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” says the 21-year-old. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his relatives support to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Off-field noise are not really a problem for Camara, who looks up to Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and accuracy from dead-ball situations are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his competitive fire, having been sent off at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Upcoming Goals

At Monaco, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he remains committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's often ribbed by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the senior Africa Player of the Year down the line.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends a modest start, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
