The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That
Whenever a major honors show approaches, one notices an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually that have no home during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition completely during that awards season
- Another imaginative release was excluded that year
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait decades.
