Mount Mahameru Eruption in Indonesia Prompts Evacuations

Indonesia's Mount Semeru, the highest peak on Java island, has exploded, blanketing multiple communities with falling ash, leading to evacuations and causing officials to elevate the alert to the maximum level.

The mountain in East Java province released blistering plumes of hot ash and a combination of stone, molten rock, and gases that moved up to 4 miles down its sides multiple times from noon to dusk, while a thick column of fiery clouds rose 2km into the sky, as stated by Indonesia’s Geology Agency.

The eruptions that occurred throughout the day forced authorities to increase the mountain's warning status on two occasions, from the third-highest level to the top level, the authority said. No casualties have been reported.

Over three hundred residents in the three villages most endangered in the area of Lumajang region were relocated to official safe havens, according to a spokesperson for the national emergency management body.

He stated that heightened volcanic movements of the volcano on Wednesday afternoon led officials to widen the hazard area to 5 miles from the crater. People were urged to keep away from an zone along the Kobokan River, which is the path of the lava flow, as searing gas moved down the volcano's sides.

Footage on online platforms showed a dense cloud of ash sweeping through a forested valley to a river beneath a bridge. Residents, some with faces covered with ash and rain, escaped to makeshift refuges or departed for alternative secure locations.

Regional news outlets reported that authorities were facing challenges to rescue about 178 people stranded on the 12,060-foot mountain at the Ranu Kumbolo observation station. The party comprised 137 hikers, 15 porters, seven guides and six travel representatives, according to an spokesperson with the national park.

“They remain secure at Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post,” an official stated in a video statement. He said the station was situated 2.8 miles from the summit on the northern slope of the mountain, which is not in the path of the hot cloud flow that was observed moving to the south-southeast. Inclement conditions and precipitation forced the team to remain overnight there, he added.

The volcano, also known as Great Mountain, has erupted many occasions in the last two centuries. Still, as is the situation with numerous of the 129 active volcanoes in the archipelago, thousands of people continue to reside on its fertile slopes.

The mountain's last major eruption was in late 2021, when 51 individuals were killed and several hundred more were injured and settlements were buried in layers of mud. The event forced the evacuation of more than 10,000 people from their homes.

Indonesia, an archipelago of more than 280 million people, sits along the Pacific seismic belt, a curved series of fault lines, and is prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.
