Israeli citizens commemorate two-year remembrance of 7 October incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations advance
People have assembled around the country to remember two years since the Hamas-led assault on October 7th, 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.
The attack led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are considered reliable by the UN and other world agencies.
"The aggressive opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the leader added on Tuesday.
He also promised to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the return of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again pose a danger to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled official commemorations until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still took place throughout the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of people killed in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.
Hours earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.
Ceasefire Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the plan.
A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the talks said that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative stated the day's discussions concluded without concrete outcomes, amid disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas seeks to make certain Israel does not resume combat after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He added that the negotiations are "challenging and have still not produce any major advancement," but noted that mediators are making efforts to close the gaps between the two sides.
Critical Points in Discussions
- A lasting ceasefire
- The swap of the hostages still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies distribution
- Post-war governance of the region
Civilian Feeling
In the city's public square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother endured the attack on the Nova music festival, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were abducted by Hamas fighters - told: "Nowhere seems like home anymore and until all the hostages come back not a single person will have peace of mind."
"When we see everyone home once more, we can relax anew. Then we can start to rebuild," she continued.
Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the loved ones of the captives. Israel says 48 continue in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be living.
Protester a participant explained: "We need do every compromise required for the abducted to return. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be protected."
Surveys now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of Israelis want the conflict to conclude in as payment for the liberation of the captives.
Gaza Situation
At the location of the music event, those paying respects gathered to remember the victims.
From there, the boom of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where witnesses said the heavy Israeli bombardment carried on.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were reported in the early hours of that day in the west side district, sector and zone districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the northwest.
"As the evening arrives, the dread arrives with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.
"We are afraid of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, holding each other, especially my youngest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we look at the reports to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the conflict will resume to us."
Health Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area announced it had received the corpses of several people by the daytime, including three who died in an Israeli attack in the southern area.
Another medical facility in the southern urban center of Khan Younis indicated two more fatalities had been brought there. One of them was killed by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the southern area, health workers stated.
