Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters
A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying such medications should be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.
This challenge is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
