Eurovision Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

A new term emerged several months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This designation is specific to Gaza, as stated by medical experts including child health specialists. Normally, it is unusual for doctors to attend to a child who has lost their entire family. But, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of young amputees surpasses that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal about scores of doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.

An Unimaginable Crisis Regardless of a Reported Truce

Gaza remains a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that atrocities are continuing. Authorities rejects these claims, just as it refutes all charges it is accused of. Yet as young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its declared purpose of “togetherness and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to offer a prestigious stage for Israel, although at least four European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, it seems, is what global togetherness resembles.

Historically, Eurovision banned Russia from competing in 2022 over the “grave situation in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is treated differently.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Set aside the news that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still denied independent reporting in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On While Ignoring Profound Human Cost

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – almost double the current lifespan of a person in Gaza at present. The event will proceed, but it will never be able to restore the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. An institution that initially championed togetherness has transformed into a transparent instrument to sanitize military aggression.
