The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
