Democratic lawmakers Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Execution
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed anger after the ex-president charged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "turncoats" and declared they should be taken into custody and sentenced "through capital punishment" following their posting of a disputed video.
The Message That Triggered the Dispute
The recorded message, shared on earlier this week, includes six Democratic elected officials who in the past acted in armed forces or defense roles.
"Similar to us, you all swore an pledge to protect and uphold this national charter," the representatives stated in the short video. "At present, the risks to our constitution aren't just from overseas, but from within our own country. Our laws are unambiguous, you can reject improper directives, you can reject unlawful commands, you have to refuse improper directives. No one has to execute commands that violate the legal system or our constitution."
Donald Trump's Angry Reaction
The clip reportedly prompt a angry reaction from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another message, he declared: "This constitutes really concerning, and Risky to our United States. Their statements cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials React
Following Trump's statements on that day, House Democratic leader released a unified statement condemning the statements.
"Political violence has no place in the United States," they declared. "Congress members who appeared in the video all worked our country with exceptional loyalty and excellence. We strongly censure Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous death threats against congressional representatives, and appeal to House Republicans to strongly do the same."
The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in touch with security officials "to guarantee the security of these representatives and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these unhinged online messages and withdraw his violent discourse before he causes harm," the announcement added.
Lawmakers' Strong Answer
The representatives who were featured in the video also published a response.
"We serve as veterans and defense specialists who care for this country and swore an pledge to protect and defend the constitution of the United States," they said. "This commitment lasts a lifetime, and we aim to maintain it. No threat, pressure, or incitement will stop us from that fundamental duty."
"What's most telling is that the former president views it subject to penalty by death for us to repeat the statutes," they continued. "Military personnel should recognize that we have their protection as they carry out their pledge to the national charter and duty to obey only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They continued: "All citizens must come together and condemn the ex-president's demands for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a moment for principled stance."
More Partisan Responses
The Democratic Senate minority leader also condemned Trump's statements and shared on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the capital punishment of government members."
He continued: "This constitutes an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, all citizens – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this right away and absolutely."
The Conservative official supported Trump's assertion that the Democrats had participated in "treason", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This constitutes very risky, you have leading members of the government advising military personnel to defy commands, I think that represents historic in US history."
The Conservative representative also allegedly informed media outlets that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the crime of sedition" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and decide all that."
Administration Response
During a White House press conference on that day, when inquired by a journalist, "Does the president want to execute members of Congress?", the executive branch representative answered: "Absolutely not."
"Let's be clear about what the president is addressing," the representative stated. "You have current representatives of the American legislature who conspired to organize a digital communication to personnel of the national defense, to current military personnel encouraging them to defy the commander in chief's legal commands."
She said: "The purity of our armed forces rests on the command structure, and if that system is violated, it can lead to casualties, it can lead to chaos, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are fundamentally supporting."
