British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this operation for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among thousands of British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

During December, the US military executed what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Islamic State still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
